Climate Change

Commenting on the news that the Liberal Democrats have secured Parliamentary time for a debate on climate change, local Ladywood campaigner David Nikel said, "The Liberal Democrats prioritise the environment. We need to ensure that what we do on the planet does not so damage the world that future generations will not be able to live in safety. And time is rapidly running out."

"That is why I welcome the news that the Liberal Democrats in Parliament have secured time for a vital debate on Wednesday which will call for Parliament and Government to sign up to the 10:10 campaign and commit to achieving a 10% reduction in emissions by the end of 2010."

"I hope local all our MPs in Birmingham will vote for this action, whatever their political persuasion. The Lib Dems endorsed the 10:10 campaign at our recent federal conference and many Liberal Democrat run councils have shown the way. Now we are calling for the whole public sector to sign up. Once again, the Liberal Democrats are demonstrating leadership on the environment."

"Under this government there has been a shameful lack of action on climate change. Green taxes have gone down and the government are still pushing for environmentally disastrous new policies like Heathrow airport expansion, new nuclear and dirty coal power stations."

"I hope the other parties will put aside partisan differences on Wednesday and support the action proposed by the Lib Dems to reduce emissions and help save the planet. Leadership now is what Britain needs."
